Groundwood and recycled fiber stocks with higher abrasive content erode impellers faster than chemical pulp stocks. Typical wear rates can reduce impeller diameter by 2 to 5 mm per year in moderate service, but high-consistency stock pumps in recycled fiber operations may wear at double or triple that rate. Site-specific wear rate trending is essential for accurate replacement planning.
Black liquor pumps typically use double mechanical seals with API Plan 54 pressurized barrier fluid systems. The barrier fluid prevents hot alkaline black liquor from reaching the atmospheric side of the seal, protecting both personnel and the environment. Seal face materials must resist the abrasive black liquor solids and elevated temperatures. Quench and drain systems prevent crystallized liquor from binding the seal when the pump is idle.
Fan pumps supply diluted stock to the headbox, directly controlling basis weight and formation. Any flow or pressure disruption from cavitation, bearing failure, or motor trip immediately affects sheet quality and can cause sheet breaks. Fan pump problems cascade through the paper machine because the headbox depends on stable, pulse-free stock delivery. Redundant fan pump installations with automatic transfer are standard for critical paper grades.
