Why it matters
Key Benefits
Prevented Ingredient Cross-Contamination
Screw conveyor cleaning verification and material traceability support allergen management programs that prevent cross-contamination between production runs of different product formulations.
Maintained Dosing Accuracy
Flight wear monitoring and trough liner condition assessment ensures volumetric screw feeder accuracy remains within the tolerances that recipe batch weights require.
Sanitary Trough Maintenance
Trough liner replacement scheduling based on measured wear rates uses food-grade compatible materials that maintain sanitary surface conditions for effective cleaning between product changeovers.
Context
Challenge & Approach
The Reliability Challenge
Food plant screw conveyors face trough and flight wear that generates metal particles contaminating food ingredients. Hanger bearings in the material stream require food-grade materials and lubricants to prevent contamination, yet these bearings have limited wear life in abrasive ingredient flows. Screw conveyor joints and welds must be sanitary with full-penetration welds ground smooth to prevent bacterial harborage. Material bridging and compaction in screw conveyors handling hygroscopic ingredients like sugar and salt causes drive overloads. USDA and FDA regulations require material-contact surfaces to be cleanable, creating design constraints on bearing and seal configurations.
Our Approach
We perform flight tip and trough liner wear measurements to track metal loss rates and predict contamination risk. Hanger bearing condition monitoring includes temperature trending and lubricant analysis using food-grade-compatible sampling methods. Motor current analysis detects compaction and overload conditions. We evaluate screw conveyor sanitary design against FDA 21 CFR and 3-A standards for material-contact surfaces. Metal detection system effectiveness downstream of screw conveyors is reviewed. Our deliverable includes a wear component replacement schedule, hanger bearing maintenance program with food-grade lubricant specification, sanitary design gap assessment, and recommendations for metal detection integration.

Learn More →Screw conveyors that handle multiple allergen-containing ingredients require thorough cleaning between changeovers. Worn troughs, damaged flight tips, and degraded seals create harborage points where previous product can hide and contaminate the next batch. Screw conveyor design must facilitate disassembly and cleaning, and condition monitoring must identify wear that creates allergen cross-contact risk before it becomes a food safety issue.
Food-grade screw conveyor troughs should be constructed from 304 or 316 stainless steel with sanitary polished finishes that resist product adhesion and enable effective cleaning. Trough joints must be continuously welded and polished to eliminate crevices. Replaceable UHMW polyethylene or other FDA-compliant polymer liners may be used for abrasive product service where metal-to-metal contact between the screw and trough must be avoided.
Dosing accuracy depends on maintaining the screw flight-to-trough clearance within design tolerances, ensuring consistent screw speed through drive system maintenance, and verifying that material feed conditions remain uniform. As flights and trough liners wear, the conveying efficiency changes and the relationship between screw speed and delivered volume shifts. Periodic gravimetric calibration checks against the volumetric output detect drift before it affects batch quality.
