The Reliability Challenge
Oil and gas plate exchangers face gasket degradation from hydrocarbon and amine exposure that causes external and internal leakage of flammable fluids. Plate corrosion from chloride pitting in produced water service and stress corrosion cracking in caustic service leads to plate perforation and hazardous fluid cross-contamination. Fouling from scale deposition, wax crystallization, and asphaltene precipitation blocks plate channels. Gasket blow-out at high operating pressures releases flammable fluids. Offshore plate exchangers operate with limited maintenance access and harsh environmental exposure. Hydrocarbon leakage from plate exchangers in classified areas creates fire and explosion risk.
Our Approach
We perform pressure-decay testing to detect internal and external plate and gasket leaks. Thermal performance analysis quantifies fouling severity. Gasket material compatibility is reviewed against process fluid composition including upset conditions. Plate surface inspection during planned disassembly identifies corrosion mechanisms and severity. We assess gasket retorquing adequacy and maximum plate pack compression limits. Our deliverable includes a gasket replacement schedule with material selection for hydrocarbon service, plate corrosion assessment, fouling management plan, and operating pressure limit verification against current gasket condition.

Learn More →Plate heat exchangers serve applications where compact size and high thermal efficiency are priorities: offshore platform process cooling where deck space and weight are constrained, produced water cooling before disposal or injection, glycol regeneration in gas dehydration systems, lube oil cooling on rotating equipment, and HVAC systems in offshore and onshore facilities. Their high surface area to volume ratio makes them especially valuable for weight-sensitive offshore installations.
Gasket failures result from chemical attack by produced water contaminants including H2S, CO2, and treatment chemicals; thermal cycling from batch processing or intermittent operation; and mechanical damage during plate stack assembly. Hydrocarbon vapors and aromatic compounds can swell certain gasket elastomers. Gasket material must be selected based on the complete fluid exposure profile including upset conditions, not just normal operating chemistry.
Offshore maintenance challenges include limited space for plate stack disassembly, crane requirements for heavy plate packs, availability of chemical cleaning solutions and waste disposal capabilities, and weather-related access restrictions. Planning maintenance during favorable weather windows and pre-staging cleaning chemicals and gasket sets before the maintenance event are essential. Some offshore operators establish onshore plate cleaning facilities and rotate cleaned plate packs to the platform.
