The Reliability Challenge
Chip metering screw flight wear causes feed rate variation that affects digester cooking uniformity and pulp quality. Lime mud screw flights erode from calcium carbonate abrasion, reducing transport capacity and creating bottlenecks in the causticizing circuit. Hanger bearing failures in sludge screw conveyors cause screw deflection and trough wear. Bark screw conveyor jams from oversize material damage flights and trip drives, interrupting boiler fuel supply.

Each material presents specific abrasion, corrosion, moisture, and density challenges that affect conveyor design and maintenance requirements.
Bark contains sand, stones, and other abrasive contaminants from the log yard. These particles erode flight tips and trough liners at rates depending on the soil contamination level at the wood source. Long bark fibers can wrap around hanger bearings and shaft seals. Oversized bark pieces cause bridging and plugging at discharge openings. Bark screening and sizing upstream of the screw conveyor reduces both the abrasive contamination and oversized particle problems.
Chemical service screw conveyors benefit from stainless steel or alloy construction for corrosion resistance, hard-faced flight tips where abrasive chemical solids contact the trough, sealed hanger bearing designs that prevent chemical contact with the bearing elements, and corrosion-resistant trough liners. Regular trough thickness measurement monitors corrosion rates and predicts liner replacement timing. Bearing lubrication systems must prevent chemical contamination of the bearing lubricant.
