The Reliability Challenge
Gasket degradation from exposure to hot process streams containing black liquor carryover and bleach plant chemicals causes inter-fluid leakage. Fiber and scale fouling on plate surfaces reduces heat transfer and increases pressure drop, limiting flow capacity. Plate cracking from thermal fatigue cycling creates leak paths that are difficult to identify without disassembly. Gasket blowout during pressure spikes from pump startups causes sudden fluid loss and process disruption.

Their high thermal efficiency and compact size make them effective for the many heat recovery opportunities that exist throughout pulp and paper mills where recovering waste heat reduces the total steam demand on boilers.
Scaling results from calcium carbonate and calcium sulfate precipitation as pulp mill process waters are heated above their saturation temperatures. Filtrates from causticizing and bleaching operations are particularly prone to calcium-based scaling. Fiber and fines accumulation in low-velocity zones between plates adds organic fouling. The combination of inorganic scale and organic deposit creates tenacious fouling that requires chemical cleaning with scale-dissolving acids followed by alkaline wash.
EPDM gaskets provide good resistance to the alkaline conditions common in kraft mill streams. NBR gaskets serve applications with limited hydrocarbon exposure. For bleach plant applications with chlorine dioxide or hypochlorite contact, EPDM or PTFE gasket materials are required for chemical resistance. High-temperature applications require gasket materials rated for the specific temperature and chemical combination. Gasket material must resist the full range of fluids including cleaning chemicals used during maintenance.
