The Reliability Challenge
Oil and gas gas turbines face hot section oxidation and creep under continuous baseload pipeline and offshore service. Compressor fouling from salt air in offshore and coastal environments, sand in desert locations, and hydrocarbon vapors in refinery settings reduces power output and increases heat rate. Fuel gas quality variations from pipeline composition changes cause combustion instability. Offshore turbines operate in salt-laden, high-humidity environments that accelerate hot corrosion and compressor blade pitting. Remote pipeline stations require gas turbines to operate with high availability and limited maintenance windows. API 616 governs design and testing requirements.
Our Approach
We perform corrected power and heat rate trending to separate compressor fouling from hot section degradation. Borescope inspections document combustor, nozzle, and bucket condition against OEM life limits. Exhaust temperature spread analysis detects combustion anomalies. Compressor wash effectiveness is tracked through post-wash performance recovery measurements. We evaluate fuel gas conditioning system performance for moisture and contaminant removal. Offshore gas turbines face salt-laden intake air that causes hot corrosion on turbine blades, high humidity that promotes compressor fouling, platform vibration transmitted through the mounting structure, limited maintenance access and parts availability, and weight and space constraints that limit support system sizing. Enhanced inlet filtration with coalescing stages, corrosion-resistant blade coatings, and condition-based maintenance programs are essential for acceptable offshore turbine reliability.
EPA NSPS Subpart KKKK regulates NOx emissions from stationary combustion turbines. NESHAP Subpart YYYY may apply depending on HAP emissions. State permits under Title V impose site-specific emission limits. Offshore installations fall under BOEM and BSEE regulations. Pipeline compressor stations may have additional state-specific requirements. Increasingly stringent methane regulations also affect gas turbine exhaust and startup emission management.
