Oil and gas blowers on produced water aeration systems handle corrosive atmospheres containing H2S and CO2 that attack rotor profiles and housings. VRU blowers must maintain suction on storage tanks to capture hydrocarbon vapors and prevent atmospheric venting regulated under EPA emission standards. Catalyst conveying blowers at refineries ingest abrasive catalyst fines that erode internal clearances. Seal leakage on blowers handling hydrocarbon vapors creates flammability and emission concerns. State regulations may impose additional or more stringent requirements. Vapor recovery blowers collect these emissions and route them to sales gas lines, vapor recovery units, or combustion devices. Blower reliability directly affects the facility ability to maintain continuous emission capture and regulatory compliance.
H2S in the gas stream corrodes blower rotors, casings, and shaft seals. Even low concentrations cause pitting and material degradation over time. Elastomer seals and gaskets swell or deteriorate from H2S exposure. Lubricants absorb H2S and form corrosive byproducts. Blowers in sour service require H2S-resistant materials of construction, compatible seal materials, and increased oil analysis frequency to detect lubricant degradation from gas absorption.
Rotary lobe (Roots-type) blowers are the most common choice for vapor recovery due to their ability to handle variable gas composition and liquid carryover. Liquid ring compressors serve applications with high liquid content in the vapor stream. Rotary vane blowers provide an alternative for smaller capacity applications. The selection depends on gas volume, required pressure ratio, liquid content, gas composition, and the specific vapor recovery or control system requirements.
