They also supply the process air for fluid bed drying, granulation, and coating operations. In each application, blower performance directly affects product handling consistency and process control. Capacity loss from rotor wear or pressure reduction from internal leakage changes conveying velocities or process air volumes in ways that affect product quality.
Pharmaceutical conveying blowers must prevent powder escape from the conveying system to protect workers from potent compound exposure and prevent environmental cross-contamination. This requires sealed blower housing designs, HEPA-filtered exhaust on the blower atmospheric side, and containment-verified connections at all duct joints. Blowers handling potent compounds may require additional engineering controls based on the occupational exposure limit of the material being conveyed.
Fluid bed drying relies on precise air volume and temperature delivery through the product bed. Blower capacity determines the air volume available for drying. If blower performance degrades, the air volume decreases and drying rate slows, potentially extending batch drying time beyond the validated limit or producing product with inconsistent moisture content. Monitoring blower discharge pressure and flow against validated setpoints provides early detection of performance degradation.
