Why it matters
Key Benefits
Reliable Turbine Control and Protection
Hydraulic fluid monitoring on electro-hydraulic control systems ensures the fluid cleanliness, viscosity, and fire resistance that turbine control and protection valve actuators require for safe and responsive operation.
Maintained Governor and Valve Actuation
Pressure and flow testing on governor and stop valve hydraulic circuits confirms the actuation speed and force delivery that turbine overspeed protection and load control depend on.
Protected EHC System Integrity
Fire-resistant hydraulic fluid management for EHC systems near high-temperature steam piping maintains the fluid properties that prevent ignition in case of a hydraulic line failure.
Context
Challenge & Approach
The Reliability Challenge
Power plant turbine hydraulic control systems require extremely clean fluid to prevent servo valve spool sticking and trip valve malfunction. Particulate contamination from system wear and ingression causes turbine control instability and nuisance trips. EHC fluid (phosphate ester) degrades from moisture absorption and oxidation, producing acidic byproducts that attack system materials. Accumulator bladder failure reduces available hydraulic energy for emergency turbine trip valve closure. Coal handling hydraulic systems face contamination from dusty environments. Hydroelectric dam gate hydraulic systems must operate reliably for flood control and dam safety, often after extended idle periods.
Our Approach
We perform hydraulic fluid analysis including cleanliness per ISO 4406, acid number, moisture content, and resistivity for EHC phosphate ester systems. Servo valve condition assessment through frequency response testing identifies spool sticking and pilot stage degradation. Accumulator pre-charge verification ensures adequate stored energy for emergency trip functions. System filtration effectiveness is evaluated through upstream/downstream particle counting. We test turbine trip valve closing times against OEM specifications. Our deliverable includes a fluid conditioning program, servo valve maintenance schedule, accumulator testing plan, trip valve response time verification, and a hydraulic system reliability program supporting NERC generation reliability requirements.

Learn More →Steam turbine electro-hydraulic control (EHC) systems use phosphate ester fire-resistant fluids (typically Fyrquel or equivalent) because of the proximity to high-temperature steam piping. These fluids resist ignition and self-extinguish if sprayed onto hot surfaces, unlike petroleum-based hydraulic oil that would ignite and create a turbine building fire. Phosphate ester fluids require specific maintenance practices different from mineral oil hydraulic systems.
The EHC system actuates the turbine control valves, stop valves, and intercept valves that regulate steam flow and provide overspeed protection. If the EHC system cannot close the stop valves rapidly during an overspeed event, the turbine can accelerate to destructive speeds. EHC system reliability is literally a turbine protection safety function. Regular valve stroke testing, accumulator pre-charge verification, and fluid condition monitoring are essential safety maintenance activities.
EHC system contamination sources include phosphate ester fluid degradation products (which are acidic and attack metals and seals), water ingress from steam seal leaks and humidity condensation, particulate from internal component wear and corrosion, and external contamination introduced during maintenance activities. Continuous purification using ion exchange and particulate filtration systems maintains fluid condition. Regular fluid analysis for acid number, water content, resistivity, and particulate is essential.
