The Reliability Challenge
Belt splice failures on chip conveyor systems halt fiber supply to digesters and create pulp production bottlenecks within hours. Idler bearing seizure in outdoor bark conveyor applications causes belt damage and fire risk from friction-generated heat. Drive pulley lagging wear reduces traction and causes belt slippage during wet and frozen material handling. Belt mistracking on inclined conveyors causes material spillage that creates housekeeping and safety hazards in conveyor galleries.

Wet bark at 50 to 60 percent moisture content is heavy and adhesive, creating high belt loading and material carryback that builds up on return idlers and pulleys. Bark sticks to belt surfaces and conveyor components, requiring effective belt cleaning systems. Frozen bark in winter creates additional loading and can cause belt mistracking. Belt tracking and cleaning systems must be robust enough to handle the variability of bark moisture and consistency across seasons.
Bark and chip conveyors present fire risk from friction heat at misaligned or seized idlers, hot work in adjacent areas, spontaneous combustion of fine material accumulation, and lightning strikes on outdoor conveyors. Bark is more combustible than wood chips due to its lower ignition temperature and higher surface area. Heat detection along conveyor paths, automatic deluge systems at enclosed transfer points, and regular housekeeping to remove material accumulation are essential fire prevention measures.
