Plate heat exchanger gasket life is influenced by temperature, chemical exposure, compression set, and assembly torque—creating a complex degradation model. Gasket failure leads to external leaks or cross-contamination between process streams, both with potentially serious consequences. Plate corrosion may progress non-uniformly, with certain plate positions experiencing higher corrosion rates due to flow maldistribution. Fouling rates depend on process fluid characteristics that may change seasonally or with feedstock variations. Plate pack reassembly after cleaning introduces variability in gasket compression that affects gasket life. We develop models that account for these application-specific variables to produce meaningful life predictions.
Our Approach
We compile gasket replacement records with associated operating conditions (temperature, pressure, fluid chemistry) and analyze using Weibull methods to determine gasket characteristic life for each service. Plate inspection records (thickness measurements, visual condition assessments) are analyzed for corrosion rate determination. Thermal performance data trending quantifies fouling rates and provides the basis for economically optimized cleaning intervals.
