Acid gas streams (HCl, H2SO4, HF) attack carbon steel and aluminum fan components through chemical dissolution. Chlorine and chloride compounds cause pitting and stress corrosion cracking in stainless steel. Fan wheel material loss from corrosion creates progressive imbalance and reduces airflow capacity. Corrosion at housing joints creates air leakage that reduces the negative pressure on the exhaust ductwork, compromising capture effectiveness at source hoods.
FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic) fans handle a broad range of acid gas services at moderate temperatures. Alloy fans in Hastelloy, Inconel, or duplex stainless steel handle high-temperature or highly concentrated acid services. PVC and polypropylene fans serve lower-temperature dilute acid applications. Material selection must account for the full range of gas composition and temperature including upset conditions and the presence of condensate that concentrates corrosive components.
