They maintain slight negative pressure on vapor collection piping to draw vapors to recovery systems, thermal oxidizers, or flares. Blower capacity must match the vapor generation rate under all operating conditions including tank filling, temperature changes, and barometric pressure drops that increase vapor evolution rates.
Chemical vapors cause corrosion of rotors, casings, and shaft seals; swell or dissolve elastomer seals and gaskets; and degrade lubricants when they migrate through seals into bearing housings. The specific degradation mode depends on the vapor composition. Monitoring oil condition for chemical contamination, tracking vibration for rotor corrosion-induced imbalance, and inspecting seal condition are essential maintenance activities for blowers in chemical vapor service.
Rotary lobe blowers with cast iron construction suit non-corrosive gas applications. Stainless steel or specialized alloy rotors and casings are available for mildly corrosive service. For highly corrosive applications, coated carbon steel, FRP-lined housings, or fluoropolymer-coated wetted surfaces may be required. Centrifugal blowers with chemically resistant impeller materials serve larger volume applications. The selection depends on the specific chemical exposure, temperature, and required flow and pressure.
