The Reliability Challenge
Chemical plant screw conveyors experience combined erosion-corrosion on flights and trough liners from abrasive and chemically aggressive bulk solids. Hanger bearing materials must resist both abrasive wear and chemical attack from the conveyed product. Trough seal failures allow chemical dust emissions that create worker exposure and environmental compliance issues. Material bridging and compaction in screw conveyors handling hygroscopic chemicals causes drive overloads and product degradation. Reactive chemical powders require inerting systems integrated with conveyor operations to prevent fire and explosion hazards.

Learn More →Screw conveyors handling hazardous chemicals must provide dust-tight containment at trough joints, shaft seals, and the inlet and discharge connections. Dust-tight designs prevent both material release to the surrounding area and ingress of atmospheric moisture that could react with moisture-sensitive chemicals. Nitrogen blanketing within the conveyor trough may be required for oxygen-sensitive or pyrophoric materials. Containment requirements are defined by the material safety data sheet and facility Process Hazard Analysis.
Between material changeovers, the screw conveyor must be thoroughly cleaned to remove all residual material. For chemically incompatible products, cleaning verification may require visual inspection, swab testing, or air purge monitoring. Material-dedicated conveyors eliminate cross-contamination risk for the highest-consequence chemical combinations. Written changeover procedures should define the cleaning method, verification criteria, and responsible personnel for each material transition.
Stainless steel (304 or 316L) is standard for most chemical applications. Hastelloy, Inconel, or duplex stainless steel may be required for highly corrosive service. Abrasion-resistant alloys or hard-faced flight tips extend life when handling abrasive chemical solids. Trough liners in UHMW or PTFE protect against both corrosion and abrasion. Material selection must account for the chemical composition and temperature of the conveyed material and any cleaning chemicals used between changeovers.
