VFD-generated harmonics can induce noise on 4-20mA instrument signal cables, affect thermocouple and RTD readings, cause interference with communication networks including Modbus and HART, and create voltage distortion that affects power supply quality for DCS and PLC systems. Proper cable routing, shielding, grounding practices, and harmonic filters at the drive or system level minimize these interactions.
Critical maintenance includes cooling system cleaning and fan replacement (chemical atmospheres accelerate filter loading), power connection inspection for corrosion from trace chemical vapors, DC bus capacitor health testing, and verification that purge or pressurization systems on classified area installations are functioning properly. Drive cabinet seals and gaskets degrade in corrosive chemical atmospheres and require periodic inspection and replacement.
