Equipment Condition Assessment for Submersible Pumps
Specialized Equipment Condition Assessment programs for Submersible Pump Reliability & Maintenance.
Why it matters
Key Benefits
Comprehensive Health Baseline
Multi-technology condition assessment establishes a documented health baseline for all submersible pumps components including the submersible motor, impeller stages, thrust bearing, and cable assembly. This baseline quantifies current condition and provides the reference point for tracking future degradation.
Remaining Useful Life Estimation
Condition assessment data for submersible pumps supports remaining useful life estimates for critical wear components. These estimates inform capital planning, spare parts procurement, and outage scheduling decisions.
Prioritized Corrective Action List
Condition assessment of submersible pumps produces a prioritized list of deficiencies ranked by severity and consequence. This enables maintenance teams to allocate limited resources to the most impactful repairs first.
Context
Challenge & Approach
The Reliability Challenge
Submersible pump condition must be assessed largely from above-surface measurements, limiting direct inspection of mechanical components. Insulation resistance readings must be temperature-corrected to be comparable across measurements taken at different times — uncorrected readings produce misleading trends. Cable condition between the pump and the junction box at grade level is assessable through insulation resistance and hipot testing, but cable buried in concrete or within the wet well cannot be visually inspected. Performance assessment requires flow measurement and head calculation, which may require temporary instrumentation if permanent devices are not installed. Corrosion and structural condition of the wet well, guide rails, and discharge piping affect pump installation alignment and vibration, but are only assessable when the pump is pulled — these observations must be captured during any pull event. Motor current signature analysis can detect bearing and rotor defects in submersible motors but requires baseline data for comparison.
Our Approach
We conduct submersible pump assessments using a combination of above-surface testing and historical data review. Electrical testing includes insulation resistance measurement at specified test voltage with temperature correction per IEEE 43, polarization index calculation, cable insulation resistance between conductors and between conductor and ground, and motor current analysis at operating load. Performance assessment compares measured flow rate and motor amperage against the pump curve at measured system head. We review historical insulation resistance records to establish degradation trends and estimate remaining insulation life. Installation condition is assessed from above-surface observations (discharge connection, junction box, control panel, wet well water level control) and supplemented by any available data from previous pull events. Each pump receives a condition classification: green (continue operating with routine monitoring), yellow (schedule pull within defined timeframe), or red (pull immediately, risk of imminent failure). Assessment reports include pull priority rankings across the submersible pump fleet, estimated insulation remaining life, and recommended monitoring intervals.

Learn More →A comprehensive condition assessment for submersible pumps includes visual inspection, vibration analysis, thermographic survey, oil analysis if applicable, and performance parameter evaluation against API 11S and NEMA MG-1 baselines. The assessment covers the submersible motor, impeller stages, thrust bearing, and cable assembly and produces a condition score for each component along with a prioritized list of deficiencies requiring corrective action.
Condition assessments for submersible pumps should be performed prior to major turnarounds to scope outage work, before and after extended idle periods, when acquiring or transferring assets, and at regular intervals determined by equipment criticality. Baseline assessments on newly commissioned submersible pumps are essential for establishing the reference condition for future comparisons.
Assessment results for submersible pumps drive maintenance budgeting, outage planning, and capital replacement decisions. Component condition scores are mapped to urgency categories ranging from acceptable through requires monitoring to immediate action. Remaining useful life estimates derived from condition data support long-range asset management planning and help justify capital expenditure requests.
