The Reliability Challenge
Piston seal wear on press section cylinders causes internal bypass that reduces nip loading force and creates moisture variation across the sheet profile. Rod seal leakage on calender cylinders contaminates sheet surfaces with hydraulic oil and causes product quality downgrades. Rod scoring from contaminated hydraulic fluid accelerates seal wear and creates progressive leakage. Cylinder cushion wear on chipper infeed systems causes impact loading that damages cylinder mounts and chipper disc assemblies.
Our Approach
We measure cylinder drift rates under load to quantify piston seal bypass and correlate with nip pressure variations. Rod surface profilometry identifies scoring that accelerates seal degradation. External leakage tracking monitors rod seal condition between cylinder rebuilds. Positioning errors result from cylinder internal leakage causing slow drift, servo valve contamination causing erratic response, rod seal friction variation causing stick-slip behavior, and hydraulic fluid temperature changes affecting oil viscosity and actuator response characteristics. Each source produces characteristic profile variations detectable in basis weight scanner data.
The wet, humid, and chemically active pulp mill environment accelerates cylinder seal degradation, rod corrosion, and hydraulic connection corrosion. Rod wiper seals must effectively exclude fiber, water, and chemical mist from the seal chamber. Chrome rod surface quality must be maintained because even minor corrosion pitting accelerates seal wear. Stainless steel rod materials and enhanced wiper seal designs extend cylinder life in the aggressive mill environment.
