The Reliability Challenge
Steam turbine vibration interpretation requires understanding of rotor dynamics specific to each machine — vibration changes caused by blade fouling, thermal bow, coupling misalignment, and bearing degradation each produce different spectral signatures. Performance assessment requires accurate measurement of inlet and exhaust conditions, extraction flows and pressures, and shaft power or generator output, which may require temporary instrumentation if permanent performance monitoring is limited. Trip system testing (overspeed, high vibration, low oil pressure, thrust bearing temperature) involves actual trip device actuation, which carries process upset risk and requires careful coordination with operations. Borescope inspection provides direct blade condition observation but is limited to stages accessible through existing inspection ports — not all blade rows may be inspectable without disassembly. Governor system response testing involves load or speed perturbations that must be performed within safe operating limits.
Our Approach
We conduct steam turbine assessments through a multi-discipline protocol. Mechanical assessment includes vibration measurement at all bearing locations (radial, axial) with spectral analysis, shaft proximity probe data review for orbit and runout analysis, bearing temperature and lube oil temperature trending review, coupling condition evaluation (where guard removal is permitted), and gland seal condition assessment (steam leakage observation, gland condenser operation). Performance assessment includes comparison of actual inlet/exhaust conditions, stage efficiencies, and overall turbine efficiency to design and historical values, with quantification of any degradation. Protection system assessment includes functional testing of overspeed trip, vibration trip, low oil pressure trip, and thrust bearing temperature trip per API 612 recommended practices, with as-found setpoint documentation. Borescope inspection covers accessible blade rows, documenting blade deposits, erosion patterns, tip clearance observations, and any cracking or mechanical damage indications. Lube oil system assessment includes oil analysis, reservoir condition, oil cooler performance, and filter condition. Each turbine receives an overall condition grade, protection system test report, performance degradation summary, and prioritized recommendation list with estimated costs for corrective actions and next overhaul scope items.
