Why it matters

Key Benefits

Comprehensive Health Baseline

Multi-technology condition assessment establishes a documented health baseline for all centrifugal fans components including the impeller (wheel), housing, shaft, bearings, and inlet damper or variable inlet vanes. This baseline quantifies current condition and provides the reference point for tracking future degradation.

Remaining Useful Life Estimation

Condition assessment data for centrifugal fans supports remaining useful life estimates for critical wear components. These estimates inform capital planning, spare parts procurement, and outage scheduling decisions.

Prioritized Corrective Action List

Condition assessment of centrifugal fans produces a prioritized list of deficiencies ranked by severity and consequence. This enables maintenance teams to allocate limited resources to the most impactful repairs first.

Context

Challenge & Approach

The Reliability Challenge

Fan impeller condition assessment requires internal access for wall thickness measurement — NDE techniques (ultrasonic thickness measurement) can quantify material loss, but access to internal blade surfaces may require removing the fan from service and opening the housing or entering through an inspection door. Impeller erosion patterns are not uniform — leading edges, trailing edges, and back plates erode at different rates depending on particle characteristics and fan geometry, and measurement locations must be selected to capture the most severe wear. Bearing condition assessment through vibration analysis must account for fan operating speed and blade pass frequency contributions that can interfere with bearing defect frequency detection. Housing structural cracking from fatigue or corrosion may be hidden behind insulation or cladding and requires removal of covering materials for adequate inspection. Foundation condition assessment for fans in elevated installations requires access to structural members and anchor bolts that may be difficult to reach.

Our Approach

We conduct centrifugal fan assessments through a systematic protocol covering rotating components, stationary components, and structural supports. Impeller assessment includes visual inspection of blade surfaces, leading and trailing edges, back plate, and hub welds through the inspection door or during planned shutdown, with ultrasonic wall thickness measurements at defined blade locations and hub areas. Vibration assessment includes measurement at all bearing locations (horizontal, vertical, axial) with spectral analysis per ISO 10816 for severity classification and bearing defect frequency identification, and overall vibration trending against historical baselines. Bearing and housing assessment includes bearing housing fit evaluation (where accessible), pedestal bolt condition, and temperature measurement. Housing assessment includes internal and external visual inspection for cracking, erosion, and corrosion, inlet cone condition, and expansion joint assessment. Damper mechanism assessment includes linkage condition, actuator travel and response, blade position accuracy, and shaft seal condition. Foundation and structural assessment includes anchor bolt condition, grouting integrity, structural member corrosion, and platform condition. Each fan receives condition grades for impeller, bearings, housing, damper mechanisms, and structure, with impeller remaining life estimation, identified safety concerns, and prioritized recommendations with repair cost estimates.
